Rock 'n' Roll
Here is a video to help you choreograph some rock 'n' roll dance moves.
BREAd
This term we are continuing our "Investigating Change" unit by looking at the importance of yeast. We have looked at yeast and learnt that it needs food like us. It loves sugar and warm water! When these three ingredients combine they make a gas called Carbon Dioxide. This is how bread rises.
We also made a very broad definition for "bread". We decided that scones, pikelets and muffins could be a bread too.
Our Definition: A food that is made from a dough, using flour, that needs a rising agent and then has to be baked"

This term our Connected Learning topic is Science. We are learning about Solid, Liquids and Gases.
We are learning about liquids. A liquid is something that can flow easily and takes the shape of the container it is in.
We have also been learning how to use the Internet programme "Wordle". So we decided to brainstorm all the liquids we could think of. Have a look at our brainstorm. Can you think of any other liquids?

HOw PopCorn Pops!
We have been looking at gases this week in Science. We wondered how a gas could change the physical characteristics on unpopped popcorn
We looked at unpopped and popped popcorn. We then drew diagrams of the popcorn then wrote descriptions about what they looked like. Here are some of our findings:-
We looked at unpopped and popped popcorn. We then drew diagrams of the popcorn then wrote descriptions about what they looked like. Here are some of our findings:-
- Popcorn pops because there is water inside it and the heat causes this to change to a gas. The water turns into steam and wants to come out so it pushes the popcorn inside out. By Oliver
- This is how popcorn pops- did you know there is water inside the kernels and when heat warms this up it turns into steam. This makes the kernels pop inside out. This is because the steam has nowhere to go so the gas uses pressure and pops the kernel. By Jahvan
- The popcorn pops because it has water in it. This turns into steam when heat is added. It then moves around very fast and it explodes. It explodes because it gets to powerful and tries to get out. By Nic
- The steam has nowhere to go as it gets hot. Heat changes the liquid, water, inside the kernel turns into steam. The shell turns inside out now it is popcorn. By Paige
- There is a little amount of water in the kernel and the water gets too hot so expands and changes into a gas called steam. The steam is so powerful it has no where to go inside the kernel so makes it turn inside out. By Jasmin
What do Baking Soda and Vinegar do when mixed?
Today we learnt what happens when baking soda and vinegar are mixed together. It creates a reaction where bubbles form. These bubbles are a gas called Carbon Dioxide. When we put baking and vinegar in a bottle and a balloon on top the bubbles went up into the balloon. This is because gas goes up and everywhere. It goes everywhere because it has few particles that don't stick together, and likes to move about.

What reaction takes place when Mentos meet Diet Coke
We wanted to find out if a reaction would happen if Mentos mints were added to Diet Coke.
Here are some of the results we found out:-
Here are some of the results we found out:-
- I saw the pressure push the gas up because of a reaction that happened when the Mentos and Coke touched. By Dale
- I saw the Diet Coke had the longest reaction compare to the normal coke. I saw lots of bubbles flow out of the bottle like a fountain. By Sam
- I saw it blow up and out went the bubbles. By Tere
- I saw the Mentos sink to the bottom and the Coke exploded as I had said in my hypothesis. By Jesse
- I saw the coke fizz up and create a gas when the Mentos was dropped in. By Zac
- I saw the coke fizz up to the top of the bottle, then explode into a fountain. By Mao
- The Coca-cola exploded up out of the bottle into the air. By Ruby
The Water Cycle
Last week we began our learning about The Water Cycle. At first, there were a lot of tricky words to read and pronounce but now we can read and say them like pro's! We researched the Water cycle and tried to understand what each word (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, accumulation) meant, and what their job in the cycle was. We discovered that the sun is pertinent to the whole cycle working. We have started an experiment to see if we can make our own water cycles in a bag. Check out our class window to have a look.
Ancient Egypt
We have been learning about the changes that have happened from Ancient Egyptian life to the life we live today in New Zealand.
One change we have noticed is that the Egyptian writing was called hieroglyphics, and used pictures to represent different objects, actions, sound or ideas. There were more than 700 hieroglyphs. Some pictures stood for whole words.
We can tell a lot about ancient civilizations by their written history. When we write, we use letters to form words. The Ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphs. It was much more difficult to learn and write. They used over 1000 different symbols. We just have 26 symbols.
This is the hieroglyphic alphabet:

St Patrick's Day
During week seven we learnt about tiny little leprechauns and how they like to play tricks on people. We learnt that if we caught one they had to tell us where their gold was hidden as this is leprechaun law. So we decided to make some leprechaun traps. Have a look at our photos, do you think they will catch those pesky leprechauns...? The kindy children thought they were pretty impressive and believed that they would.
On Friday we celebrated St Patrick's day early by having a "Green Day". Unfortunately those pesky, cheeky leprechauns evaded us. The
only thing that we caught were golden chocolate coins and eggs. Those pesky cheeky leprechauns tricked us!!!

Hockey Skills
Tania and her helpers Joyce and Jen have taught us some basic hockey skills. We learnt to dribble the ball on our hockey stick and how to stop. We had to make sure we used the flat side of our stick. We also played lots of fun games like rob the nest, make a snake and we had a competition to see who could race across the courts the fastest and then get into our hockey pose. Our hockey pose is making sure your left hand is at the top of the stick, right hand at the bottom of the handle and have knees bent with one foot forward.
Tania also challenged us to see how many times we could juggle a ball on our hockey stick. Some of use were better than others.
Check out our slideshow of our skills...

Taylor Trip to Town
Today we visited Mr Harris at St Johns, Craig at the Fire Station, and the ladies at the Art Gallery. We really enjoyed our day out and about in Ashburton. A highlight for lots of us was using the fire hose and squirting water.
