HaiKU Poetry
A Haiku poem is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. It consists of three lines. LIne 1 has 5 syllables, line 2 has 7 syllables, and line 3 has 5 syllables. The subject is usually about nature of the seasons, so we have decided to write about animals, and their habitats that we have been learning about. Have a read and see what you think.
Stretch a Sentence
We have been learning to change a simple sentence into a compound or complex sentence using a "Stretch a Sentence" writing plan.

Character Description
This term we have been learning to write character descriptions. We have learnt to add adjectives and similes to help describe our ideas, and make our writing more exciting for our audience.
We wrote and published descriptions about one of our grandparents. We wrote about what they looked like, what we liked to do with them and why they were special. We then made portraits of our grandparents using pastel and dye. We were very proud to share our fantastic descriptions. Come into Kauri to have a look at more displayed on our walls.

Our wild selves
Are you scared of monsters? Well, don't come into Kauri! We have been writing about our own made up monsters and some of them are pretty scary. We tried to make our descriptions sound interesting by using a question or a super sentence at the beginning of our writing.
We also have been learning about using a range of punctuation marks and throughout our writing we used questions marks, exclamation marks and full stops.
Here are some of our descriptions and artwork.

Time Capsule
Yesterday we buried our time capsule. Inside our time capsule were letters we had written to ourselves to see how much improvement we have made from the start of the year to the end of the year. In our letters we wrote about things that we predict might change about ourselves. We also wrote about our favourite things at the present time. We wonder how many of these will change by the end of the year.
Room 12 was with us as we dug our hole. First we all worked together to dig a big hole with Mr Kellet's spade and trowel. We used the trowel to finish our hole off by getting rid of all the soft, lose dirt. As we dug we found two carrots and a potato. Can you guess where we have hidden our time capsule? We are all sworn to secrecy. No one will know till the end of the year where we hid it.
It was Room Five's first time capsule. Our time capsule is small and is protected by an ice-cream container and a plastic bag. We buried it deep under ground so we had to make certain that nothing was going to ruin our letters. We had so much fun digging up the dirt to plant our time capsule.
